Trends in Wedding Dresses for Spring 2011

With all the recent buzz over the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and especially Kate's wedding dress, I thought that it would be good to look at some of the current trends in wedding gowns. Obviously, one of the newest ones is long sleeves and lace.

This is a throwback to a classic style from the 50's which you can see in the beautiful photograph above of Grace Kelly. With one simple act Kate Middleton has now influenced the current world of bridal gowns and I think that we should be seeing more of her style in the near future. There has been so much talk about her dress that you can visit one of many websites totally dedicated to it here.

Wedding fashion has been influenced by the royal family in England for over one hundred and fifty years now. Many of our current wedding traditions, like white wedding dresses, wedding cake, and bridal bouquets, were set my Queen Victoria when she was married to Prince Albert in 1840. You can read more about these wedding traditions in my posts 'It's All About the Dress', 'Let Them Eat Cake', and 'Bridal Bouquet Photographs for Spring.'

Photographing many weddings and bridal portraits allows me to watch the new dress trends up close. While I have not seen all of these ideas materialize here in Houston just yet, I wanted to list a few that I have seen appearing lately. Besides the long sleeves and lace trends here are some other fashion trends for wedding dresses this spring.

1. keyhole neckline

I have seen a great deal of these on dresses lately. Instead of just having a regular strapless dress this neckpiece gives the bride the ability to add some sparkle or pearls to the top of the dress but still give a revealed and open neckline look. Sometimes there is no embellishment, just fabric.

2. billowy skirts

These wedding dresses take on more of a ballroom air with lots of volume in the skirt created by layers of tulle. Even though they have more material, the tulle and the layers give them a light, airy look.

3. sheer coverage

Sheer necklines are coming in, bringing with them an elegant and slightly sexy look. These could include V-necks, one-shoulder, or bateau styles. the bateau style is the one that closely follows the collarbone and has a little more of a conservative look.

4. modified mermaid style

I recently photographed a bride with a modified mermaid style dress from Maison de Mode in Houston. It had a very sleek and elegant look. The dress produces nice clean lines which are great for design in photographs. The modified mermaid style makes it a bit easier for the bride to move around on the dance floor because the dress flares just above the knee.

5. embellished belts

I have been seeing many brides with wedding gowns that have these beautiful sparkly belts. Chelsea Clinton helped to fuel this trend. These belts can be very dramatic when placed against a simple white dress. Most of them are silver and jeweled. They are a lovely addition to any dress, but I think that they are the most effective when they compliment simple dresses.

So there are some wedding gown trends for this spring. I will be interviewing some local wedding gown experts and photographing some wedding gowns in the near future so I will have lots more information for you soon. Stay tuned.

Bridal Bouquets for Spring

Since we are now into Spring I thought that it would be a good idea to post some lovely fine art photographs of brides and their wedding bouquets. Flowers pay such a special role in any wedding. They really add beauty and some great smells, but they contain a great deal of historical meaning and semiotics. The tradition of the bridal bouquet goes back to Queen Victoria and her marriage to Prince Albert in 1840. She was one of the largest influences on modern day bridal traditions. Victoria is the main reason why brides still traditionally wear white dresses and why wedding cake is served at the reception. You can read more about these in my posts 'Let Them Eat Cake' and 'It's All About the Dress.' Queen Victoria ushered in a very modern age for the time. During her rein the industrial revolution was in full swing in Europe. She was very much a celebrity of her time and just like with celebrities of today, people followed what she did and wanted to be as much like her as possible. The traditions set forth at her wedding to Albert have remained strong even to this day. It is amazing how many influences from the Victorian era still exist today.

Prior to Queen Victoria's marriage it was still common to have herbs and spices at the wedding. Remember that these items would have been a great deal rarer than today and they held a higher value in society. They were a sign of prosperity, fertility, and happiness. Victoria replaced these traditional items with fresh flowers, especially marigolds. At the time most of the components of the bouquet were edible. The bride carried her bouquet with her as she walked down the aisle. One component of the bouquet was dill. It was regarded as the herb of lust, and the bride would eat some of it was she walked down the aisle. Later, during the reception, the groom and the wedding guests would eat this dill also. This was to insure fertility in the marriage.

During the Victorian times flowers came to symbolize secret messages of love and each flower had a different meaning. This was based on a scientific language known as 'Florigraphy.' Many flowers were given means, both good and bad, that still remain to this day. This is where the concept of roses symbolizing love began and the idea of different color roses being used for different occasions. Today flowers at a wedding are chosen more for their colors and shapes than for their meanings.

I am still fascinated by all of the tradition and ceremony that surrounds marriage. I will continue to make posts that unlock some of the hidden meanings of the wedding ceremony. Stay tuned.

The Royal Wedding - The DRESS!!!

It has been an exciting start to the day as I have been honored to have watched a moment of history as Prince William married his college sweetheart, Miss Catherine Middleton. Today has been filled with anxious moments by many viewers of waiting to see what Kate would wear, who the designer would be, how her hair would be, if she would indeed do her own makeup, what Kate's sister Pippa would be wearing, how the Queen would be dressed, and if all of the royalty would be calm, at peace and full of smiles and tears of joy.

We'll sum it all up for you here.

Kate looked breathtaking, wearing an amazing wedding gown with lace, a full skirt, long sleeves, a scallop and heart shaped neckline and with a long train, designed by Sarah Burton for Alex McQueen. Kate's hair was down with the front half being pulled back (with a bit of a poof), accompanied by the Queens Cartier “halo” tiara. The Queen was given this tiara on her 18th birthday and it was made in 1936. It is too early to say if Kate borrowed it from the Queen or if the Queen handed it down to Kate as a gift. It looks as though Kate did do her own makeup which looked beautiful and flawless, while still looking like her, which is what she wanted. She had mentioned that she wanted Will to 'recognize' her on their wedding day.

Kate's sister Pippa wore a cowl neck and ivory dress, also designed by Sarah Burton for Alex McQueen, that was elegant and remarkably simple. Kate's mother, Mrs. Carole Middleton, wore a pale blue outfit designed by Catherine Walker. Her hat was designed by Berkshire-based Jane Corbett. The Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker-Bowles, wore an outfit designed by Anna Valentin. The Queen wore an Angela Kelly designed yellow dress. The Queen looked remarkable in a bold yellow, however I wish that smiles were more frequent from her on this joyous occasion.

Speaking of the outfits, I speculate that what took place today will change the wedding industry with leaps and bounds as far as trends and what has been known for years in the US. For starters, it is normally unheard of and extremely frowned upon to wear white or ivory to a wedding, unless you are the bride. With Kate's sister Pippa wearing an ivory gown, this will probably carry over to become a new trend in the US for upcoming weddings. I don't feel that it will as trendy as how wedding gown themselves will look in the coming months, or days for that matter. Kate's dress had form fitting, long sleeves with lace details. With many people buzzing about how gorgeous the dress is, I can see this becoming an instant trend here in the US.

It amazed me how at peace everyone looked and how mellow many seemed to be. I did see a little shake from Kate's hand as she took her 4 minute walk down the aisle, however other than that, it looked like a walk in the park. That confidence and poise, along with her adorable smile, is what makes Kate glow and sparkle everyday.

Fine Art Wedding Photography

When my friend Jim and I started Red Photo last year we wanted to be different from the rest of the wedding photography crowd. So we sat down and thought about what makes us unique and what we have to offer a bride and groom to be. For us it was experience. We both have been professional photographers for many years. Each of us has extensive experience in commercial photography. In addition I have been a fine art photographer for the past 12 years and have had my work displayed on over 100 gallery exhibits in the US and Asia. We both have a great depth of photography knowledge and each of us have been teaching for a number of years. So when we began our wedding photography business we wanted to create a fine art product, a customized product, one that would really capture the memories of that special day so that our clients would always have them. We create fine art wedding photographs and multimedia fusion presentations.

Many people have asked me what is the concept behind making these fine art photographs. Well there are several layers to that. I believe that fine art is a vision, a way of seeing the world in a stylized and unique way. Fine artists are not afraid to take risks, because the end result is a unique gift. Fine art can also be obtained in how the image is presented. We produce customize wedding albums for all of our clients and each image inside has been worked on extensively by me to add a new dimension to it. Every image is treated in its' own way. What fine art photography is not is just a bunch of random filters or actions. Too many people get lulled into believing that there is some quick fix to make spectacular images. And they are wrong. You can't just buy artistic vision and wisdom, you have to practice and gain it. Without a vision and an intent you are left with a lesser product. Art takes time, experimentation, patience, and courage. You have to have the courage to follow your instincts and be able to create. We appreciate clients who understand this and value art and photography.

Our wedding photographs are unique and so are our clients. We always go out of our way to give them a truly beautiful and unique product that will last for lifetimes. That is why we feel that the wedding album is so necessary and important, even in this age of digital photo posts everywhere. People think that the wedding photo market in Houston is conservative and that people will never go for something different. But there are many couples here who are looking for something that is extraordinary. They want a customized product that makes them stand out from everyone else. And that is where our vision of fine art photography comes into play.

People should not just follow the market. For more on this you should read my posts 'Be the Leader, Not the Follower', 'The Courage to Stand Out', and 'Stand Out From the Crowd.' Too many people are afraid to let their own style come out. They are afraid that the market will not accept them and then they end up being a 'me too' product. Your uniqueness is what people want. So develop your style and celebrate it so that your real customers will be attracted to you. For more advice on developing your own style you should read 'Finding Your Artistic Style.'

Go out and do what you do best. The world is waiting.

Let Them Eat Cake, Wedding Cake

The past few weeks I went to two bridal shows. There were plenty of vendors to see and of course, lots of wedding cake to sample. So I thought that I would post a few wedding cake images from recent weddings that I have been photographing. It is a gratuitous sugar rush and there is even a few chocolate cakes in the mix.

So a little history on the wedding cake. It has to be the most recognized symbol of the wedding day feast. The cutting of the cake and the sharing of it with guests is always a high point of the occasion. When everyone eats together a bond is formed. Food has always been a form of social and familial glue. The serving of a special food to guests says that they are welcomed and appreciated. The cake also serves as a symbol of fertility and plenty. The cake of today evolved from the pile of small hard biscuits that were served during the ancient Greek weddings. The biscuits were seasoned with honey and sesame seeds. The honey symbolized sweetness and the sesame seeds represented the bitterness of life. The idea of the normal ups and downs of anyone's life which is reflected in the 'for better or worse' of the wedding vows. There are also associations with good harvest because the biscuits, and later the cakes, were made from wheat. Small pieces of these biscuits were crumpled over the bride's head for good fortune and success in bearing children. This may have evolved into the throwing of rice at weddings. Later this ritual involved into the production of many small cakes. During the seventeenth century the idea of producing one cake from the many small cakes came into being. White, sugar frosting was used to stick the small cakes into a larger creation. Breakthroughs in baking technology in the 1800's made possible the production of light, airy cakes, like we see today. As with the wedding dress, see 'It's All About the Dress', Queen Victoria had a type of wedding cake that represents those that we see today. But her cake was a little over the top with a weight of 300 pounds and a nine foot diameter. It was decorated with marzipan and had gold 'love' charms inside. Now that is a cake for all of you competitive brides out there. Just about every culture has their take on the wedding cake or the serving of something sweet at the marriage ceremony. Sharing sweets brings happiness to guests and this tradition continues today with all types and shapes of cakes being made.

Here are some images from Kristi and Justin's beautiful wedding at the historical Houston Heights Fire Station. There was beautiful light inside the near 100 year old building and it gave the event a wonderful glow. Although the bride and groom to be were a little nervous everything went off without any problems. One of the things that I really enjoy about photographing weddings is getting there early and seeing the entire event come together. It is always amazing to me how a simple room can be decorated and turned into a wonderful area for the wedding ceremony. I also am fascinated by watching people set up the room for the reception. Since I enjoy taking many detail photographs, being around the venue early gives me a great opportunity to capture these types of shots. You can read more about this in my posts 'It's All in the Details at a Wedding' and 'Don't Forget the Details.' It also allows me time to get to know the people in the bridal party a little better. This makes it much easier to photograph during the event. I spend a lot of time with my clients before the actual wedding day. I really like to get to know my clients, their likes an dislikes, and it makes them more at ease in front of the camera. Later on, when the event begins, there are too many other things going on to worry about these detail shots. There are so many 'must have' shots and many of these are happening very quickly, like the first kiss, or the bouquet toss by the bride. You can see a photo of Kristi's bouquet toss here. I enjoy capturing all aspects of the special day for my clients. Houston is a great market for weddings. There are all types of historical venues and indoor and outdoor locations. The historic Heights Fire Station is just one of those places. I love the old worn wooden floors upstairs where the reception took place. There are also loads of great old photographs on the walls. It is such a welcomed difference from the more generic ballroom type of venues. I am hoping that I can get to photograph a neat ranch wedding in the future. After all this is Texas y'all.

Wedding, Crowne Plaza Houston River Oaks Hotel

The Red Photo team recently photographed at the Crowne Plaza River Oaks hotel in Houston, TX. We were there to capture all the elements of a wedding including the brides having their make up done, bridal portraits, interiors of the hotel, the reception area, and food. Coordinating an all day photography shoot like this can be a challenge. There were brides to schedule and food to create, along with details like flowers. We needed access to the bridal suite and a hospitality suite. And that is before we had to move all of our equipment into and around the hotel. We must have been quite the spectacle, especially when we were photographing the brides in the lobby area with a flash popping off every few seconds. One of the hotel workers thought that the fire alarm light was going off. The hotel staff was very helpful and they made our day run a little bit smoother.

Behind the camera was Jim Stevens, Monee Fly, and me. Monee also help with her expertise in food styling. Isaac Lopez (Zea) was our assistant and muscle. He saw to it that one went too close to all of our equipment and that said equipment made it from one set to another. Honestly, we were all over that hotel.

Everyone did a great job. I want to thank our brides, Thea and Melinda. They were wonderful to work with and we had a great time. With so many set ups to photograph we needed everyone to help. Production was handled by Jeanna Auger, Catering Sales Manager for the hotel. Food was created by Brian Pashkoff, Executive Chef, and his staff. Make up was done by Thea from KAYO by Thea. It was great having someone who could model and do make up. The flowers were provided by Sabrina Torres of Always Floral. Thea's amazingly beautiful dress was provided by Maison de Mode.

"I was drawn to the sound of the bagpipes by some ancestral force, buried deep in my psyche. The tunes get my “blood up” like no other music. I can almost smell the peat burning in a cottage fireplace and feel a Highland breeze come down through a heather strewn glen. Playing the bagpipes, being a piper, is an extension of my creative soul – much more than a mere hobby. I took up the pipes in 1991 and have been devoted to learning the intricacies of the instrument ever since. I play at weddings and other events in the United States and abroad.
One of my greatest thrills was to play by the shores of Loch Ness in Scotland, hoping to lure the monster out to listen. My goal when playing at a wedding or other event is to provide a unique and memorable listening experience. Traditionally, the piper leads the bride into the ceremony and the happy couple out at the end of the service. Insights from Laura Lee Designs: New York Bridal Fashion Week

Although we were not able to attend Bridal Market in NYC, we were lucky enough to have one of our FAVORITE designers, Laura Lee Williams of Laura Lee Designs, send us great insight to what went on in NYC!! Enjoy...

Let me start to paint a picture in your mind: Autumn in New York, great weather and the sense and feel of a cozy sweater to wear is in your future. NOTHING is better than autumn in New York!

I have done one show in New York for Bridal Week and that was a few years ago. Now, a new venue with a lot of great vendors and new looks for the most popular traditions in America: Being a Bride! The venue was at Pier 94, the site was large and the buzz was great. There were so many designers I’d never heard of both for wedding gowns and accessories. Being in handbags and such, I wasn’t sure I fit in since I have such an array of color and design. I really never have focused long and hard on my bridal line and after this show, I know it’s a must incorporate and open my line up to stronger silhouettes, proportions and non-traditional color. Now it’s to the sketchpad for some doodling and creativity!

Let me tell you about some of the great people I got the chance to meet: Liv Hart of Enchanted Atelier, Matthew Christopher Bridal, Lindsay of Haute Bride and Claire Pettibone Bridal. Notice the photos of the amazing and whimsical fashion show where Claire showed her line with an ethereal theme of magic, fairies and gold dust! It truly was spectacular and everyone was in awe of the lines on the bridal dresses, the way it flowed with the girls as they walked the runway: The hair, makeup, and overall feel were of magical but sensuous butterflies, opulent in their beautiful dresses which are for brides but made you feel like you were part of a lovely flight of Fairies. The stunning headpieces and accessories were by the very talented Liv Hart of Enchanted Atelier. The compilation and partnership of the rich and intense work by both designers was a delight for all.

To top everything off, an invitation to the bible of bridal magazines ‘The Knot’ had an over-the-top event at the New York Public Library. The transformation shocked and stunned everyone and the main entrance literally made one stop in their tracks: I first noted the largest floral design ever of a bride that was easily 12 ft. tall. I’m thrilled to say it was designed by the event planner extraordinaire Preston Bailey. Believe me, it was simply, “over-the-Top”!

Talk about well thought out~Later when leaving ‘The Knot’s’ party, a limo was awaiting for those of us going to the ‘Martha Stewart’ VIP event at her office. It really made it so much easier for those of us who wanted to enjoy both venues. So off I went, from the classy event at the NY Public Library to Martha’s cross-town extravaganza. What fun and what an experience to top off the evening with a truly spectacular thematic party: Tiny ice sherbets, apples on a stick dipped in caramel, and all the dessert one could possibly imagine in every shape and size. Truly a terrific party ~ Where else can one get a nail manicure, eye lash extensions and a foot massage at a party? Martha knows how to throw a stylish party!

In the end, the appreciation of the Bridal world and the newfound friendships that ensued and made will give this wanna-be designer something to look forward to for Spring 2010 New York Bridal Fashion Week!

Detroit-born Kevan Hall's fashion creativity emerged early. By the age of seven, he knew he wanted to be a fashion designer. Years later, while studying in California, he made a vision-enhancing trip to Europe, where at the houses of Cardin, Dior and most notably, Givenchy his lifelong love of luxury and haute couture was once again sparked.

In 2002, he launched his own signature, Kevan Hall Collection with a fashion philosophy that emphasizes purity of style, incomparable tailoring and sensuously draped streamlined silhouettes; Hall has a natural design sense of sophisticated elegance and uncluttered modern design. Hall’s designs have been embraced by fashion retailers and the press. In 2001, Absolut Vodka honored Hall by showcasing his spring collection in their “Tribute to African Designers” worldwide tour. His lovely atelier in Los Angeles was featured in the July 2002 issue of Interior Design magazine.

It confirmed his keen eye for design and impeccable color sense. Also in 2002, Hall won the 47^th Annual Gold Coast Fashion Award in Chicago as “Designer of the Year”. In 2005, Hall was awarded “Stylemaker of the Year” by Life & Style Magazine for his ‘drop-dead glamour’ as seen on the red carpet with Vanessa Willliams, Virginia Madsen, Katherine Heigl, Debra Messing, Edie Falco and later Ms. Ruby Dee for her 2008 Oscar nomination and Gabourey Sidibe for her 2010 Golden Globe nod. The best surprise was when Felicity Huffman won for “Best Actress in a Comedy Series” at the 2005 Emmy’s wearing his rouge silk gown with Swarovski crystal accents. “He’s the man!” she said as she credited Hall for dressing her.

In November 2005, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger invited

Hall to help promote California fashion in his “Made in California Expo”

in Beijing, China. There he dressed California’s First Lady, Maria Shriver in

a dramatic black Lyon lace gown and showed his designs in the gala fashion show to the Chinese as well as international press.

In April 2006, Hall was honored to be named one of Los Angeles’ Treasures by the Central City Association of Los Angeles for his outstanding achievements in the community of Angelenos.

In January 2008, Hall was featured in Detroit’s General Motors Style extravaganza and the next month, he returned to his home town to show his Africa: A Safari collection for the Charles Wright African-American Museum.

Hall has made guest appearances on national TV shows such as Inside Edition, Extreme Makeover, The Better Half, SoapTalk, the Jane Pauley Show, TV Guide’s- the Fashion Team and E! Fashion Police where he discussed fashion‘s current trends on and off the Red Carpet. He has given lectures at the Norman Lear Center of the University of Southern California and for the Costume Council at the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art on his inspirations and influences when designing his collection. Hall was also featured on Kimora Lee Simmons: Life in the Fab Lane as he dressed her for Vogue’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Ball in New York. Most recently, America’s Next Top Model featured Hall’s

Spring ‘09 collection as a runway challenge as he looked on as a guest judge.

Spring 2011 marks the launch of his premiere bridal collection in New York which was extremely well received by both the bridal press and retailers.

With his own Signature collection, his philosophy of fashion has remained true to those early days. "I enjoy the process of design from concept to execution," he states. Stephen's master plan to propose at the D.C. Tidal Basin during the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival in April 2009 was thwarted by the horde of excited tourists that flock to town each year just to see the blooms. Moving on to "Plan B," he proposed over cake and champagne from their favorite bakery, which was even more personal and special.

Before the proposal, Stephen's dad honored him with the ring that belonged to his grandmother, Jan, who sadly passed away several years earlier. As Stephen and Heather started to envision their engagement, wedding and life together, they hoped to find a way to honor her memory while also celebrating their own history as a couple.

To do so, they decided to have his grandmother's diamond placed in a ring setting of Heather's choosing. Today, this very ring, which is both an heirloom and also uniquely her own, sits in the center of her beautiful wrap-style wedding band.

Wedding Visions & Dreams
Heather calls her wedding-planning blog Bicoastal Bride because that’s exactly what she was! Following their engagement, Stephen and Heather spent more than a year planning their wedding in Heather's hometown of Thousand Oaks, Calif., while juggling their busy lives in Washington, D.C. Stressful? Sometimes. But by working together, staying organized, and relying on the amazing help of their families and friends, they set out to create a fabulous day that would be fun and memorable for everyone.

In keeping with their “less is more” style, they envisioned a classic yet personalized 75-guest celebration that would be both simple and elegant. Beginning with a Catholic ceremony at Heather's childhood church, and followed by a reception at the beautiful Los Robles Greens Golf Course, their “California romance” wedding would allow them to stay true to themselves and their budget while sharing the moment with their closest family members and friends.

Wedding Realities
After pouring so much love and effort into making their day special, seeing it all come together was truly incredible for them. Throughout the day, Heather felt overjoyed and proud that she was lucky enough to not only marry her dearest friend, but also see the fabulous results of the two of them working together so closely throughout the past year of planning. Their grape, white and silver color scheme was lovely, and it perfectly reflected their love of California’s lush wineries, which they also tied in by using corks as escort-card holders, California postcards as table names, and wine bottles as décor.

Their vendors truly went above and beyond for them, as well, and Heather was blown away by just how beautiful and well-organized everything was throughout the entire day. In fact, the only glitches occurred during their ceremony, first when the church’s coordinator started the processional before Heather was ready, and then during the liturgy, when the priest skipped over Heathers sister’s reading. But their guests hardly took notice, and were quick to tell them how much they loved their short, sweet and heartfelt ceremony. Heather and Stephen also received many kind compliments about their choreographed first dance, Mexican buffet, signature sangria, and the upbeat dance music that had both young and old on the floor partying the night away!

Q: What makes your company stand out from other wedding vendors?

A: At Donnie Brown Weddings we have a mantra that we stand by with every client. (It doesn’t matter what budget you are working with for your big day. Everyone deserves to have a nice wedding.)
We work diligently to pair the best vendors with every client that fits within reason of their budget and expectations in each category. As well, we are careful to try and match those with personalities that will jive well together.

Q: What made you decide to get into the wedding industry?

A: I took a job at the age of 16 on weekends and nights to help out a family friend in the at their floral design shop in west Texas. I continued working there through college and thereafter. It is part of my soul and I love it.

Q: What are your hopes for brides and grooms?

A: I want each bride to see in their wedding what they have in their imaginations. They all have this image of the perfect wedding and we strive to see that vision and make it into reality. In most cases, we attempt to surpass that goal.

Q: What are 3 frequently asked questions to you from brides and grooms?

· How do I get on “Whose Wedding is it Anyway?” The simple answer is that you can apply directly with the network or hire a planner on the cast to do your wedding. We ask every client when they sign with us if they are interested in being on the show. It all depends on the wedding, the time of year they are doing their wedding and if the story is one the network finds unique. The more interesting the story, the better chance a couple has to be a part of the show.

· What does a wedding cost? The fact is that weddings cost very different amounts depending on the region of the country in which you will be holding the event. If you are in Paris, Texas or in New York City, the economy, the cost of living and the industry environment can play a large role in the cost of the wedding. You should determine what you need to spend in your region per person and then do the math. It is the best way to get a total budget in mind. If you need help, ask a good wedding planner in your area.

· What are the first five things I should do upon getting started in my wedding planning. I always say there are really 10 that you must immediately consider.

1. Select a date
2. Determine how much will be spent on the wedding
3. Research and select a wedding planner if you decide to hire one
4. Compile a guest list
5. Create a binder for the wedding planning (even if you hire a planner)
6. Develop a working budget
7. Develop a style, theme or color palate
8. Select a venue
9. Shop for and purchase the gown
10. Interview and select vendors

Q: Tell us something that many people might not know about you:

A: I love to cook. I was raised in family owned restaurant kitchens as well as my mother’s and grandmother’s kitchen. While most kids were out playing, I was learning to cut up a chicken. I am a foodie and cook at home most every night. Restaurants are fine, but I have honed my craft in the kitchen and we find that we cannot get food in most restaurants that compares to what I can prepare at home! Perhaps one day I will have my own cooking show. Look out Food Network, here I come.

Q: What makes your company stand out from other wedding vendors?

A: I think it is who we are personally that brings people us. We believe in chance or destiny that the right people will find us who we are supposed to work with, get to know, love. The favorite part of the wedding adventure for us is getting to know our couples and their families so we can tell their stories. We share a part of ourselves with every interaction with our couples and families and I think they feel that. We fall in love with them a little more with each interaction as we discover all of the wonderful little intricacies of their personalities and family relationships. It's fun.

One of the things we work hard to do that is different, is that we try hard to find clients who not only love our shooting style but also clients that our personalities connect with. We are not afraid to send couples to our competition if we think they are a better fit for them. We believe it is not good enough to find photographers for your day, we want to help you find the right photographers for your day even if it is not us. If we do it right our couples and their families trust us and we feel like much more than vendors to them . Also, we travel just about anywhere and the drop of the hat for our clients and will do weddings just about anywhere in the country or abroad. It isn't unusual for us to meet them in Phoenix or NY for an afternoon photo shoot and lunch. We spend a lot of time with our clients getting to know them.

Q: What made you decide to get into the wedding industry?

A: It happened kind of by accident. I was working as a news photographer and friends found out I could shoot. The next thing I knew I was doing weddings and loving it. That was 15 years ago. The assignments in news I loved the most were always feature stories. So it was just a natural progession of one of my favorite things to do.When I met my husband and partner (also a journalist) something really clicked and the rest is history. One of those meant to be things, somehow I think the big guy upstairs had something to do with it.

Q: What are your hopes for brides and grooms?

A: More than anything else, I wish them a heart full of happiness and love surrounded by family and friends…is there anything better than that…as you are growing together? To have the joy of sharing with someone through the years, and knowing it is ok to get mad at them sometimes; knowing that in the next moment your heart is always going to jump a little as they come into the room. My hopes as far as service would be that would say they did not even know we were they for most of the day and that when they did we made them feel like movie stars. When they receive their images we want them to laugh, cry and giggle with all of the moments and details of the day. We want them to be able to see in our work the real feelings and essence of their love and family relationships. We want them to feel loved.

We know we have done it right when we are on the list of people they call when they are expecting like a valued family member and when three of their friends call us to hold their date.

Q: What are 3 frequently asked questions to you from brides and grooms?

A: What will my day be like is one of them? Do I give them negatives to which I reply no. Can I help them with hiding this or that or can I help them with this person or that person which I always reply yes to.

Q: Tell us something that many people might not know about you:

A: I was a flight attendant once who was afraid of heights!

The answer to the first two questions is YES! We strongly suggest you add your photo. It's a great way for people to remember what a wonderful time they had at YOUR wedding. We will work with any budget. No is not a word we like to use often. However, the answer to the last question is NO! We ship with a cold pack via Priority mail. Your chocolates arrive perfectly.

Q: Tell us something that many people might not know about you:
A: What some people may not know about me is that I was an art major in high school but didn't pursue that dream. I went in a totally opposite direction and became a pharmacy technician, a career that lasted 20 years. But my love of creating brought me back to design and where I am today. My son has followed in my footsteps and has designed some of the wrappers you see on my site. My daughter has also picked up o the design element of the business and recently designed a baby candy cake.

Planning a wedding to remember...

While planning a wedding is a full time job and task in itself, the additional stress of wanting to make your wedding as memorable as possible can be an added challenge. When I was planning my own wedding, I found myself asking the same question over and over again - "Will people remember my wedding as one of the best that they have ever attended?". I thought of all of the little details, the monogram, the invitations, the favors, the decorations, MY DRESS, the attire of the rest of the wedding party, the flowers, the songs, the cake... I found myself changing the colors and look of the wedding numerous times to have that "one of a kind" wedding that I was hoping for. With a large guest list, I knew that we might not have the overall "WOW" reaction from every guest that I had been hoping for. Becoming so frustrated with the whole question of having a memorable wedding, we even considered going to a tropical place and getting married without the huge guest list or fancy frills. However, after much discussion of wanting to be sure that we could spend our wedding day with people who we care about, that option was quickly ruled out.

I KNEW that we could make our wedding day as memorable as we wanted it to be by enjoying it, taking in the love of our family and friends, and most of all, being there for each other. Weddings can soon turn into a competition with other weddings that you have personally been to, weddings that you have seen on TV, weddings that you seen in magazines or online. It took me a little while to fully get a handle on this issue. It really was me that was being harsh on myself and getting too focused on the details of a memorable wedding. Yes, the thought still popped into my head from time to time, but in the end, I knew that it was something that I had to let go of and hope for the best.

We continued to every last detail, from the tissues for "tears of joy" for our guests with our initial on them, to having our original color theme be played out in every size ribbon imaginable, to the candles at the church, to the "Something Blue" on the bottom of my wedding shoes.

Then... the big day came and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Our wedding was a huge success. Everything came together and, even with the rain and the spot that I have wanted to have wedding pictures taken since I can remember turn into a muddy grass mess, it was perfect. It was actually the "muddy grass mess" that made one spontaneous picture the most memorable part of our wedding that our guests love and still talk about - a group picture with ALL of our guests and wedding party next to the church. Our photographer was actually hanging out of one of the church windows to get the shot. It was perfect. Nothing that I had originally planned on or even thought of, but it was perfect!

A: What makes The White Closet Bridal stand out is in my opinion, the boutique itself; it’s a very open clean and crisp atmosphere. A: My family has owned stores and worked in the fashion industry abroad and in the United States for many years. And as a child, I loved clothing and playing dress up especially in my aunt’s store!
